Kuffner Observatory
The historic Kuffner Observatory is home to an important collection of astronomical instruments from the 19th century. Enjoy an exciting astronomy programme, explore the historic Kuffner Observatory, and do not miss a look through the telescope, which is over 125 years old.
Built by the industrial magnate Moriz von Kuffner, the Kuffner Observatory on Gallitzinberg in the district of Ottakring has been restored to its original state. Until the beginning of the 20th century, state-of-the-art astronomical research was carried out there, using instruments from the companies Repsold und Söhne and Steinheil. The Great Refractor, the Meridian Circle, the Vertical Circle, and the Heliometer offer a glimpse into this bygone era. Today, the Kuffner Observatory is run by the Viennese Adult Education Centres, alongside the Planetarium at Prater and the Urania Observatory in the first district.
