Austrian Museum of Folk Life and Folk Art
Ende 2024 wird das Gartenpalais Schönborn, Sitz des Volkskundemuseum Wien, komplett geräumt, und es beginnt die Generalsanierung des Gebäudekomplexes. Die Schausammlung wurde bereits zur Gänze abgebaut und ins Depot übersiedelt. In der „ORF-Lange Nacht der Museen“ werden zum letzten Mal Teile des Hauses für Besucher:innen geöffnet. Der Zugang erfolgt über den Nebeneingang zum barocken Innenhof. Zur Besichtigung geöffnet sind die unterirdischen Räume im früheren Wirtschaftstrakt. Ein Rundgang führt weiter in einen ehemaligen Luftschutzbunker im Schönbornpark, der außergewöhnlich gut erhalten ist. Abgerundet wird das Programm mit einem Besuch der Ausstellung „Keller, Bäche, Bunker und Kanäle. Die Josefstadt unterirdisch“ im Bezirksmuseum Josefstadt.
JOSEFSTADT UNDERGROUND (6 PM-12 AM)
What can be discovered in the district? Take a short journey into the Josefstadt below-ground. The wine cellar and the former stables in the service wing of the Schönborn Garden Palace are open to visitors. They are located around the romantic inner courtyard of the baroque summer residence.

The service rooms and stables in the inner courtyard of the Schönborn Garden Palace were part of the aristocratic world. A last opportunity for a guided tour before the building is closed for general renovation. There is a former air-raid shelter in Schönbornpark. The building from the Second World War served as a museum depot for a long time. It has now been cleared and is to be given a new use for the public (two minutes walk from the museum to the bunker). The exhibition ‘Cellars, streams, shelters and canals. Josefstadt beneath the ground’ sheds light on the “Josefstadt underground' from Roman times to the present day (eight minutes walk from the bunker to the Josefstadt District Museum).
