LEOPOLD MUSEUM
The Leopold Museum houses one of the world’s most important collections of Austrian art, focusing on the Early Modern period. The museum’s highlight is the exhibition ‘Vienna 1900’ with the world's largest collection of Austrian Expressionist Egon Schiele, masterpieces by Gustav Klimt, and the world's most comprehensive permanent presentation of Oskar Kokoschka, as well as other works from Viennese Modernism and artisan craftwork from the Wiener Werkstätte.
Around 1900, there was a growing desire for a life in harmony with nature and spirituality. Inspired by theosophical ideas, spiritualism, and the new forms of dance, artists expressed a mystical approach to life. The special exhibition ‘Hidden Modernity. The Fascination with the Occult around 1900’ is dedicated to a chapter of Austrian and European cultural history that has received little attention so far.
