Dom Museum Wien
The historical treasures of St. Stephen's Cathedral, avant-garde classics from the Otto Mauer Collection and contemporary artworks enter into an inspiring dialogue. At the centre of this exciting staging and juxtaposition of old and new is the oldest portrait in the Western world, that of Rudolf IV.
The Dom Museum Wien was awarded the Austrian Museum Prize 2020 for its innovative concept. The highlight of the renovation of the historic building is a round glass elevator, surrounded by a free-floating spiral staircase, which takes visitors from Stephansplatz up to the museum, where, among other things, the new exhibition ‘Friendship’ awaits. The exhibition explores the meaning of friendship in individual as well as collective and socio-political contexts through time and in different media – sculpture, drawing, painting, photography and video art.
