Paintings Gallery of the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna

Are you familiar with Hieronymus Bosch’s ‘Last Judgement Triptych’? Come and see the highlight of the Painting Gallery’s outstanding collection at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna, and the current exhibition ‘The Great Michelangelo Is Dead! Avant-garde and Academicism’. This exhibition aims to give new form to an age-old debate. It will not use academicism as a pejorative label for all that is outdated, nor credit the avant-garde with a monopoly on the new. Rather, the objective is to uncover the creative dynamic playing out between these two poles.
Works by Giorgio Vasari, Sandro Botticelli, Tizian, Nicolas Poussin, Franz Anton Maulbertsch, Heinrich Friedrich Füger, William Hogarth, Gustave Courbet, Markus Lüpertz, Chris Reinecke, Jörg Immendorff, Katharina Sieverding, Louise Lawler, Stephan Dillemuth, Andy Hope 1930, Gunter Reski, Hong Zeiss, and others, supplemented by copies – the very essence of academic practice – as well as contemporary re-enactments by Abel Auer, Alice Creischer, Thomas Eggerer, Michaela Eichwald, Abdulnasser Gharem, Stephan Janitzky, Jutta Koether, Birgit Megerle, and Heimo Zobernig.
