Qwien – Center for Queer Culture and History
The Qwien Center is a research center with the vision of giving queerness to general history – and queer people their everyday history. The Qwien Center was officially opened in 2009. In addition to setting up an archive and a library, the centre’s task is to carry out academic research projects and to communicate queer history, in particular with guided tours of the city (Qwien Guide) and with lectures and publications. In 2019, Qwien renamed itself the Center for Queer History. In 2024, Qwien moved to a new location in the fifth district and has been Austria’s first queer cultural center since its opening in June 2025.
The current main exhibition, ‘Sweet Urges – 45 Years of Gay Comics’, offers an in-depth look into Ralf König’s drawn universe through over 100 originals. It is the largest exhibition of the star cartoonist in Austria to date and traces the key developments in his comics and illuminates the secret of his success.
With ‘Lesbian Tentacles and other Beings’, Qwien presents an exhibition by artist Katrina Daschner, whose work has been among the defining positions in queer-feminist contemporary art in Austria for many years.
