METRO Kinokulturhaus
Just a few steps away from today’s Metro Kinokulturhaus, the Lumière Cinématographe made its debut in Vienna in March 1896, marking the beginning of cinema history in Austria. Shortly afterwards, the first film footage was shot on Austrian soil, and Vienna quickly became a favoured setting for early documentary filmmaking. Cinematographers captured the vibrant everyday life of the imperial capital as well as political events, festivities, street scenes, and moments of social change.
The programme ‘100 Years of Vienna on Film’ brings together some of the most beautiful and impressive film documents from 1896 to 1986 from the Filmarchiv Austria collection.
A JOURNEY INTO HISTORICAL VIENNA (AT 7 PM AND AT 8 PM)
Live screenings of analogue 35 mm copies on a historic hand-cranked film projector with original carbon-arc lighting bring Vienna from around 1900 and the atmosphere of early cinema back to life.
