Belvedere – Upper Belvedere
One of the oldest public art museums in the world, the Upper Belvedere presents masterpieces from the Middle Ages to the present day, including Gustav Klimt's famous ‘The Kiss’.
How does an era shape its artists? This presentation of the collection at the Upper Belvedere focuses on the interaction between art and society. Influenced by the political and social environment, migration, international networks, and also by economic conditions, artistic production reflects the complexity of its time. Selected self-portraits act as a leitmotif, offering an insight into the changing image and self-conception of artists.
