Old City Hall – Innere Stadt District Museum
The Museum of the Innere Stadt district illustrates the development of Vienna, which remained identical to today's first district for almost 1,000 years. The formation of the city, including its fortifications, markets, churches, and palaces, is presented as a walk-through picture book. Pictures document the era of Maria Theresa and the Congress of Vienna. The bourgeois uprising of 1848 marked the beginning of Emperor Franz Joseph’s reign. His decision to tear down the city walls paved the way for Vienna's transformation into a European metropolis. Unique exhibits reflect this period, which came to an abrupt end in 1918. These are complemented by interesting showpieces leading up to the present day.
