Josephinum – Medical History Museum Vienna
The Josephinum, which was founded in 1785 as an academy of military surgery, now presents its rich collection as a museum. Around 1,200 anatomical wax models are exhibited in their original display cases. Other highlights include Giovanni Alessandro Brambilla's collection of surgical instruments from the 18th century and the world's first endoscope. Also on display are the prepared stomach on which Theodor Billroth performed the world's first successful gastric resection in 1880, a handwritten curriculum vitae of Sigmund Freud, the file used to murder Empress Elisabeth in Geneva, and what are believed to be parts of Ludwig van Beethoven's skull.
The exhibition ‘Skin – Ferdinand Hebra and his Atlas of Skin Diseases (1856–1876)’ shows detailed patient portraits and impressive plastic wax casts, so-called moulages. It links Hebra's pioneering work with the development of Viennese dermatology and its significance to this day: a look at the skin as a mirror of our lives.
DUO DEMMER-KALCHHAUSER (6.30 PM-9 PM)
Guitarist Martin Demmer and double bassist Gidi Kalchhauser will create an extraordinary atmosphere in the museum rooms of the Josephinum with their jazz intermezzo, taking visitors from room to room and impression to impression. They will play well-known compositions as well as improvised pieces.
