Museum of the Vienna Ambulance Service
144 is not only the emergency number for the Vienna Ambulance Service, it is also the organisation's age this year. At the Museum of the Vienna Ambulance Service, you can learn all about its origins, as well as the development of medical equipment and techniques. You can even find out how the resuscitation dummy got its face!
Today, the Vienna Ambulance Service provides 24/7 emergency medical care in Austria's capital city. 144 years ago, when Dr Jaromír Freiherr von Mundy wanted to set up a rescue organisation in Vienna, the Viennese city administration refused. It was only when more than 386 people died in the Vienna Ringtheater fire on 8 December 1881 that they changed their mind and Dr Mundy was permitted to establish the 'Wiener Freiwillige Rettungsgesellschaft' (Vienna Voluntary Rescue Society). Over time, the volunteer organisation evolved into today's Ambulance Service. The Museum of the Vienna Ambulance Service brings the history of this municipal organisation to life, providing an insight into the work of the rescue teams.
